Hiking days, picnic breaks, Winter sleep: how Smartigo handles missed days
Most streak counters share one problem: a missed day resets everything to zero. Smartigo handles it differently. Here is how, and why.
In short: Smartigo counts your hiking days and does not punish gaps. A single free day is covered by a picnic break, a longer pause (holiday, illness) by Winter sleep. Your hiking days and points stay intact.

Hiking days: counting days, not mistakes
A hiking day is a day on which you walked a leg. The number stands big at the top of the map and on your hiker profile, with your record below it. There are no grades or ratings of you as a person in Smartigo, only this counter.
We deliberately chose not to punish missed days. Our note on building a habit covers what the much-quoted study shows: a skipped day barely hurts progress. An app that punishes you for it works against what it wants to achieve.
Picnic break: a free day that costs nothing
A picnic break keeps your hiking days alive on a day without a leg. You can keep a small stock of them. How to get one:
- Free: remember the day's codeword and enter it correctly later.
- Buy: you can buy a picnic break in the shop if you like. You see the price in the store.
If your picnic breaks are used up, the app points it out: a leg or the codeword keeps your hiking days going.
Winter sleep: when you are away longer
Holiday, illness or just no mood: Winter sleep lets you take a pause that holds your hiking days. There are two lengths:
- Winter sleep week: 7 days.
- Winter sleep trip: up to 90 days, even if you are away longer.
Your hiking days and points stay put, and afterwards you pick up exactly where you left off. With the energy subscription, Winter sleep is free up to twice a year. Otherwise the single price applies, which you see in the store.
When you start Winter sleep the app shows "Good night" and you can close it. If you come back on another day, you simply carry on.
Why not simply forgive everything?
A counter that never goes back would mean nothing. Hiking days should say something: you really walked. Picnic break and Winter sleep are therefore deliberately small, explicit choices. You tell the app a day is missing, instead of it quietly skipping over it.
Smartigo is a daily walk for your head: one short leg, no account, no ads. The core features are free.
