Medication reminder not working on Android

In short

When an Android reminder fails, it is rarely the app's alarm that is broken. It is almost always something the phone does around it. Work through these causes from the top; most people find theirs in the first three.

1. The phone is silencing it, not skipping it

Check this first. A normal notification obeys the ringer switch and Do Not Disturb. If the reminder appears on screen but makes no sound, the phone did what it was told. Medifix schedules its reminders as alarms, which are allowed through, but only if the alarm permission is granted.

2. Exact alarms are not allowed

From Android 12, apps need an explicit permission to set exact alarms, and on Android 14 it is off by default for many apps. Without it, reminders can arrive minutes late or be batched. Look under Settings, Apps, Special access, Alarms and reminders, and switch it on for the app.

3. Battery optimisation is putting the app to sleep

Phones stop background work to save power. Set the app to "Unrestricted" or "Not optimised" in its battery settings. Medifix asks for this exemption during setup because the operating system would otherwise be allowed to silence it. If you skipped that screen, you can still do it by hand.

4. A brand-specific app killer

Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo and OnePlus add their own layer on top of Android. These go by names like "Sleeping apps", "Autostart", "App launch" or "Protected apps". The wording differs by brand and software version, but the fix is the same: allow the app to start itself and to run in the background. The independent site dontkillmyapp.com keeps up-to-date steps per brand.

5. The notification channel is muted

Long-press the app icon, open its notification settings and make sure the reminder category is on, has sound and is allowed to show on the lock screen. One accidental swipe to "Silent" on a notification is enough to mute the whole category.

6. The time is right but the day is not

Check the weekdays and the start and end dates of the schedule, and whether the dose was already logged. A dose already logged as taken should not nag you; if it does, tell us at hello@mintlane.io.

Test it before you rely on it

Add a dummy medication two minutes from now, lock the phone, switch on silent mode and wait. Do it once after any phone update, too. Operating system updates are the most common reason a setup that worked for months suddenly does not.

For the background on why this is so fiddly, read how exact alarms and critical alerts work. A reminder app helps with routine but does not replace your doctor's or pharmacist's advice about taking your medication.
