A medication reminder should not be behind a paywall
Free medication apps often restrict the core function — how many medications you can track, or whether reminders repeat reliably — until you subscribe. Medifix keeps reminders, scheduling, history and interaction hints free, with no ads.
When the paywall sits on the safety feature
Many medication apps are free to download and then meter the thing you installed them for. A cap of two or three medications. Reminder repeats or snooze behaviour reserved for the paid tier. History that only goes back a week unless you upgrade. Individually these look like ordinary freemium decisions. Applied to medication, they mean the reliability of a health routine depends on an active card on file.
That is a bad shape for the problem. Someone managing several prescriptions is often exactly the person least able to treat an app subscription as discretionary spending — and a lapsed subscription should never be the reason a dose is missed.
What stays free in Medifix
Medifix keeps the whole reminder path free: unlimited medications, flexible schedules, reminders that ring through silent mode, the intake log and adherence history, drug interaction hints from public FDA data, and the allergy profile. There are no ads and no tracking SDKs, so the free tier is not paid for with attention or data either.
There is one paid product, a caregiver subscription, which covers the ongoing cost of relaying encrypted updates between two devices. Everything a single person needs to take their own medication on time is outside it.
Free without the usual catch
The more common way to make a health app free is to sell the data behind it. Medifix cannot do that, because the data never leaves the device: it lives in an AES-256 encrypted local database, and there is no cloud backup at all — a deliberate decision rather than a missing feature.
That constraint is the point. An app with no server holding your medication list has nothing to monetise later, even if the business incentives change.
